Hosted Monitoring of Network - Servers - Applications - Storage - Cloud

ProCore builds its business with LogicMonitor

Tooey Courtemanche, CEO of Procore, a Web-based, SaaS provider of construction project management software, says that what makes LogicMonitor so valuable to his company’s operations has more to do with what it doesn’t do: namely, require any work on his part.

“We spent years trying to find proper tools for monitoring,” Courtemanche said. “Now, monitoring is one of those things that we don’t even have to think about anymore. And we couldn’t do that without LogicMonitor.”

Procore implemented LogicMonitor’s Hosted Monitoring solution in 2009—but prior to that, “We were looking at other monitoring systems that did not provide nearly as many capabilities as LogicMonitor—and those systems cost upwards of $60,000,” said Courtemanche. “LogicMonitor provides us with better monitoring and large time savings, at less than 10% of the cost. More, actually, when you consider the fact that we did not have to provision or buy hardware to run it on.”

While searching out an appropriate solution, Procore utilized a “bevy” of products, including Nagios, to attack their various monitoring needs. But, Sam Crigman, Director of Technogies says, because they didn’t have a SysAdmin dedicated to monitoring, Nagios—with its manual configuration requirements—“wasn’t a good fit.”

“LogicMonitor does the configuration for us automatically, and is much more straightforward in its communications,” Crigman says, “There’s no information overload, and LogicMonitor enables our product team to quickly identify issues before they become serious.”

Procore uses LogicMonitor to monitor all of the systems in its production environment, and has found many benefits in getting full coverage from one solution. “Once it was set up, we didn’t have to spend much time with it at all. If there’s ever an issue, the first place we go is LogicMonitor; it’s the only way to pinpoint which machine is the bottleneck.” But it’s not just the one-stop shopping that’s so beneficial; another key component is the automation. “A lot of times in the past, we found that when there’s an issue, it’s something we haven’t set up monitoring for yet. But LogicMonitor does it all automatically, which allows us to be proactive.”

And that ability to be proactive in dealing with issues is critical for Procore’s business. “As a SaaS, the sooner we can recognize issues, the faster we an respond, which is key, because our business model means that we’re earning our customers’ business month by month, so time is of the essence.” Also, adds Crigman, “We are able to acquire and retain customers because of our exceptional system uptime, which LogicMonitor helps us ensure.”

Procore operates using the PostgreSQL database with Linux, and with the benefit of LogicMonitor, “We were able to really speed up the PostgreSQL integration,” Courtemanche said. “The monitoring LogicMonitor set up for us is impeccable.”

Crigman also cites LogicMonitor’s customer service as a huge benefit. In fact, the monitoring Procore’s environment required was specifically requested by Courtemanche. And LogicMonitor responded by building exactly what he needed—and adding it to its standard solution.

“A huge benefit is the customer service, and the access to the LogicMonitor team. LogicMonitor knows monitoring and operations cold and their team is extremely responsive and available, so they’re really able to service our needs. We can communicate with them directly,” Courtemache said. “LogicMonitor’s tool, in conjunction with the customer service, makes it a no-brainer.”
