VMware Tools Compatibility

Problem

You may experience instability using a virtualized instance of a collector.

Symptoms include:

  • Frequent collector down notification from affected instance
  • If the collector is monitored as a device, data graphs do not indicate any one protocol is affected and will all have gaps for the same period
  • System uptime is not reset, indicating the collector is not truly going down.

Below is an example of watchdog logs from an affected instance:

Try load WrapperManager implementation class - org.rzo.yajsw.app.WrapperManagerImpl

The service watchdog logs will indicate the main service stops and attempts to restart it several times.

Cause

Due to a compatibility issue between the collector and an older version of VMware Tools, the LogicMonitor service is not able to remain running, or be restarted successfully once it stops.

Resolution

Verify the version of VMware Tools running on the collector operating system. You can use the following Powershell command to get the version:

get-wmiobject win32_product | Where-Object {$_.name -eq "vmware tools"}
IdentifyingNumber : {ECD203D2-312B-4EC7-9D55-778A81C6BDE9}
Name              : VMware Tools
Vendor : VMware, Inc.
Version : 10.0.6.3560309
Caption : VMware Tools

If the version is not 10.0.0.8 or later, either of the following can be performed:

  1. Patch the ESX host with release ESXi600-201608001 or later, then update the VMware Tools on the collector.
  2. Manually upgrade the VMware tools on the collector OS to version 10.0.0.8 or later
