Alert Tuning for Instances

Alert thresholds configured for datapoints in a datasource definition will apply to all instances of that datasource throughout your account.  This is a good starting point, but there are situations where you may need to configure a different threshold for just one instance or a subset of instances.  You can use the Alert Tuning Tab for a specific instance to configure thresholds that will override the global thresholds.  Multi-instance datasources additionally have an Alert Tuning Tab at the datasource level, which allows you to more efficiently manage each instance of the datasource from one place.

Note that you can also configure thresholds using the Alert Tuning tab for a particular device group.  Thresholds set at the multi-instance datasource or instance level will override any group and global thresholds, and group thresholds will override global thresholds.  Devices and single instance datasources do not have an Alert Tuning Tab - all alert threshold configuration is restricted to the global, group, multi-instance datasource and instance levels.

Alert Tuning Tab - Instances

The Alert Tuning Tab for an instance enables you to turn off/on alerting and manage thresholds for each datapoint (as defined in the datasource definition).  This is useful if you'd like to adjust thresholds for single-instance datasources (datasources with only one monitored instance).  If you'd like to adjust thresholds for multiple instances of one datasource (a multi-instance datasource), it is more efficient to use the Alert Tuning Tab at the datasource level (see below section).

Alert Tuning Tab - Instances

Alert

The alert toggle determines if alerting is enabled or disabled for the datapoint.  If the box is unchecked, data will be collected but no alerts will be generated.

Name

The name of the datapoint.  Select the arrow to the right of the name header to sort the rows of the table by name.

Threshold

The threshold column will display all thresholds for this datapoint.  Any thresholds inherited from the datasource definition will be displayed with '(default)', to indicate that these thresholds are applied globally.  Thresholds set specifically for this instance will also be displayed in the Threshold column.  To add or edit thresholds, click the gear icon.

Description

If a datapoint description is specified in the datasource definition, it will be displayed in the description column.

Alert Routing

Selecting the alert routing button will display which alert rules the datapoint will match, and therefore how an alert for the datapoint will be routed.  Selecting 'Send Test Alert' will send a test alert.

Alert Tuning Tab - Multi-Instance Datasources

Multi-instance datasources have an Alert Tuning Tab that allows you to edit all instances of the datasource from one place.  Specifically, grom the Alert Tuning Tab at the datasource level you can enable monitoring and alerting for specific instances, add new instances for datasources without active discovery enabled, and assign descriptions to instances.

Add Instance

You will only be permitted to add an instance if Active Discovery is disabled in the datasource definition.  For help adding an instance, see this page.

Enable

The enable checkbox toggles monitoring on/off for the instance.  If unchecked, no data will be collected.

Alert

The alert checkbox toggles alerting on/off for the instance.  If checked, alerts will be generated for the instance.  If unchecked, data will be collected but no alerts will be generated.

Description

The instance description.  This value may have been returned by active discovery or assigned manually.

Manage

Manage an instance to delete it, add/change its description, or to allow Active Discovery to overwrite the description.  Note that If the instance is deleted but active discovery is enabled, it may be rediscovered.

Instance Details

Selecting the arrow to the left of the row for an instance will expand the row to display all datapoints for the instance.  From the expanded row view you can toggle alerting on/off for each datapoint, manage instance level thresholds and see any device group thresholds or global thresholds that are set for the instance and view datapoint descriptions set in the datasource definition.
