Agentic, autonomous ITOps improves incident response by carrying context from detection through resolution, reducing noise, delay, and manual coordination.

  • Modern incident response struggles not because data is unavailable, but because reasoning is fragmented across tools, teams, and handoffs.

  • AI agents address this by correlating signals, preserving context, and guiding decisions across detection, triage, remediation, and learning.

  • Edwin AI applies this model in production, using specialized agents and governed automation to move incidents from signal to fix without sacrificing control.

Most IT incidents don’t fail due to missing data. Monitoring systems generate more than enough signals. The problem is that understanding those signals—and deciding what to do with them—happens in fragments. Engineers move between dashboards, logs, tickets, and chat threads, stitching together context by hand. Each step depends on people transferring state from one system to another.

This fragmentation turns humans into coordination layers. Time is lost not in execution, but in the reconstruction of what happened, where it started, who owns it, and what action is justified.

Agentic AIOps systems change this paradigm by assigning responsibility for reasoning. Instead of presenting disconnected information, they carry context forward as work progresses.

LogicMonitor’s Edwin AI is built on this approach. It uses specialized AI agents, each focused on a distinct phase of the incident lifecycle—detection, triage, decision support, and remediation. These agents share context, preserve intent, and reduce handoffs, so incidents move forward with continuity rather than being reassembled at every stage.

This blog explains how Edwin AI applies agentic, autonomous ITOps across the full incident lifecycle.

Detection: Event Intelligence Agents Separate Signal from Noise

In many IT environments, detection relies on static thresholds applied to individual metrics or events. When systems degrade, this produces alert storms—large volumes of alerts triggered by the same underlying issue. Teams respond by manually suppressing alerts or tuning rules after incidents occur. Detection becomes reactive, and important signals are often delayed or overlooked.

This model treats alerts as endpoints rather than inputs to reasoning.

How Event Intelligence Agents Work

Event intelligence systems approach detection as a correlation problem. Specialized agents ingest telemetry from multiple sources, including metrics, events, logs, topology data, and third-party events. Instead of evaluating each signal independently, the agents analyze relationships across time, infrastructure, and services.

These agents:

  • Deduplicate repeated or redundant signals
  • Suppress low-value or derivative events
  • Correlate related signals into higher-level patterns

The output shifts from individual alerts to incident candidates—grouped signals that point to a shared cause. Confidence scoring indicates how strongly the data supports each candidate, helping teams prioritize attention without relying on static thresholds alone.

This approach reduces alert volume, improves time to detection, and increases signal fidelity. Operators receive fewer notifications, but each one carries more context and a clearer indication of whether action is required.

How Edwin AI Applies Event Intelligence at Detection

Edwin AI implements event intelligence through dedicated Event Intelligence Agents. These agents continuously ingest observability and third-party data, apply correlation and suppression logic, and surface incident candidates with confidence signals. The goal is not to replace existing monitoring tools, but to add a reasoning layer that turns raw telemetry into actionable detection.

Incident Creation: Agents Turn Signals into a Coherent Incident

In many tools, incident creation is treated as a routing step. Alerts cross a threshold, a ticket is opened, and context is expected to be added later. The handoff between detection and incident management is thin, and the incident record often contains little more than timestamps and raw alert references.

This forces responders to reconstruct what happened before they can decide how to act.

How Incident Creation Agents Work

Agentic systems treat incident creation as a reasoning step. Correlation agents carry forward the grouped signals identified during detection and formalize them into a single incident. This preserves relationships between events instead of flattening them into a list.

Summary agents then generate an initial explanation of the incident. This includes a clear title, a plain-language description of what is happening, and an initial assessment of category and priority based on scope and impact. The intent is to provide a usable starting point, not a placeholder.

When IT service management systems are in place, integration agents synchronize the enriched incident into tools such as ServiceNow. The incident arrives with context, rather than requiring teams to populate it manually after the fact.

In this approach, the incident enters the system already explained. Responders begin with a shared understanding of the problem, rather than a blank record that must be interpreted under time pressure.

How Edwin AI Creates Incidents from Correlated Signals

Edwin AI uses dedicated correlation, summary, and ITSM agents to perform incident creation as a single, continuous step. Correlated signals are grouped into one incident, enriched with an AI-generated title and summary, categorized, prioritized, and synced into downstream systems. The focus is on preserving context across the handoff from detection to response, rather than treating ticket creation as a mechanical trigger.

Triage: AI Investigation Agents Do the Heavy Cognitive Work

Once an incident is created, triage often becomes the most time-consuming phase. Responders review dashboards, search logs, check recent changes, and scan historical tickets to understand what is actually failing. Each tool provides partial information, and conclusions depend on individual experience and availability. This step absorbs time not because analysis is complex, but because context is scattered.

How AI Investigation Agents Work

Investigation agents operate on the correlated incident rather than on raw telemetry. They analyze event relationships, topology dependencies, and historical patterns to form a working explanation of cause and impact.

These agents:

  • Identify likely root causes based on correlated signals and system topology
  • Compare the current incident to similar historical incidents and their outcomes
  • Assess impact by mapping affected services, resources, or users

The output is structured reasoning. Instead of raw data, responders see synthesized analysis that narrows the problem space and clarifies where attention should be focused.

With AI agents, triage shifts from manual reconstruction to informed validation. Teams spend less time gathering evidence and more time confirming conclusions and deciding on next steps.

How Edwin AI Investigates and Triages Incidents

Edwin AI uses investigation-focused AI agents to analyze incidents as unified entities. These agents surface likely root causes, highlight similar past incidents, and provide impact context directly within the incident view. The system does not replace human judgment, but it reduces the analytical burden required to reach it.

Recommendation: Decision-Making Agents Propose the Best Next Action

After triage, teams usually understand what is wrong but still face uncertainty about how to respond. Multiple fixes may be possible, runbooks may exist but be hard to locate, and the risk of making the situation worse slows action. Decisions depend on individual judgment rather than shared context. Any hesitation here extends resolution time even when the underlying issue is understood.

How Decision Agents Work

Decision agents operate on the outputs of investigation rather than starting from raw data. They evaluate the incident context, likely cause, historical outcomes, and environmental constraints to propose remediation options that are appropriate for the situation.

These agents:

  • Recommend specific remediation paths tied to the identified cause
  • Surface relevant runbooks or documented procedures at the moment they are needed
  • Indicate confidence based on past success and similarity to known incidents

The goal is not to automate decisions by default, but to make the tradeoffs explicit and grounded in evidence.

Now, teams move from analysis to action with less delay. Recommendations reduce ambiguity, shorten decision cycles, and help responders act consistently across shifts and teams.

How Edwin AI Recommends Next Actions

Edwin AI uses decision-focused agents to translate investigation results into actionable recommendations. The system surfaces suggested remediation steps, relevant runbooks, and confidence signals within the incident context. Operators retain control over execution, but they no longer have to determine the next step from scratch.

See how agentic AI automates incident response.

Go deeper

Resolution: From Decision to Action with Agent-Guided Execution

Even when the correct action is known, execution introduces risk. Scripts are run manually, steps are skipped under pressure, and fixes vary by operator or shift. Automation exists, but it is often disconnected from incident context and gated behind separate workflows, which limits its use during active incidents. This disconnect creates a gap between knowing what to do and doing it safely.

How Execution Agents Work

Execution agents connect remediation decisions to operational workflows. They use structured incident context to parameterize actions, enforce guardrails, and ensure that execution aligns with policy and change control.

These agents:

  • Prepare remediation actions using incident-specific inputs
  • Support human approval, staged execution, or autonomous action depending on confidence and policy
  • Capture execution results and feed them back into the incident record

Automation becomes conditional and auditable rather than brittle or opaque.

Remediation is faster and more consistent. Actions are repeatable, governed, and tied directly to the reasoning that justified them. Teams reduce manual effort without increasing operational risk.

How Edwin AI Executes Remediation

Edwin AI integrates execution agents with AI automation platforms such as Red Hat Ansible. Incident context is passed directly into approved playbooks, enabling targeted remediation without manual translation. Governance controls, approvals, and audit logs remain intact, allowing teams to increase automation gradually while preserving trust and accountability.

LogicMonitor, IBM, and Red Hat Deliver Self-Healing IT

Automation that runs without context increases risk. Scripts execute correctly but at the wrong time, against the wrong systems, or for the wrong reason. At the same time, context without automation slows response, forcing teams to translate analysis into action by hand.

Agent-guided automation addresses this gap by linking observability and execution in a single flow. Incident reasoning informs remediation, and remediation outcomes feed back into the system.

How it works

Edwin AI agents pass structured incident context—root cause indicators, affected resources, and recommended actions—directly to the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform. This removes the need for manual interpretation and re-entry of information.

Playbook execution agents can:

  • Recommend existing Ansible playbooks that match the incident context
  • Dynamically parameterize playbooks using real-time incident data
  • Execute actions with human approval or autonomously, depending on defined guardrails

Execution is deliberate, traceable, and tied to the reasoning that justified it.

Playbook generation with IBM watsonx Code Assistant and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform

IBM watsonx Code Assistant extends this model by reducing the effort required to create and maintain automation. When root cause analysis identifies a repeatable remediation pattern, Edwin AI can use watsonx to help generate new Ansible playbooks based on that analysis.

This approach shortens the path from insight to automation. Teams spend less time writing and updating scripts and more time standardizing fixes that can be reused safely across incidents.

Critically, enterprise controls are preserved. Change management workflows, role-based access, approval requirements, and audit logs remain enforced. Agents operate within established governance boundaries rather than bypassing them. Automation scales, but accountability does not disappear.

Explore how agentic AIOps enables self-healing IT with LogicMonitor, IBM, and Red Hat.

Post-Incident Learning: Agents Preserve Context and Improve Future Response

After an incident is resolved, attention moves on. Tickets are closed, notes are incomplete, and post-incident reviews are uneven or skipped. Even when lessons are documented, they rarely feed back into detection logic or response workflows. The same patterns reappear, and teams relearn the same lessons under pressure. This is not a process failure as much as a tooling gap. Most systems treat incident closure as an endpoint.

How Learning Agents Work

Learning agents treat resolution as another source of signal. They capture what happened, what action was taken, and whether that action was effective. This information is structured so it can be reused, not just archived.

These agents:

  • Generate concise incident summaries and resolution records
  • Link outcomes to root causes, remediation steps, and confidence levels
  • Feed results back into correlation, recommendation, and execution models

The system retains institutional knowledge without relying on manual documentation.

Each incident improves future response. Detection becomes more accurate, recommendations more precise, and execution safer over time. Teams spend less effort relearning past failures and more effort on higher-value work.

How Edwin AI Feeds Resolution Outcomes Back into the System

Edwin AI uses post-incident agents to automatically summarize incidents, capture outcomes, and feed those learnings back into its event intelligence and decision agents. The goal is not formal postmortems for every issue, but continuous improvement embedded directly into day-to-day operations.

Incident Response as a Coordinated System of AI Agents

Incident response breaks down when each phase operates in isolation. Detection surfaces noise, triage rebuilds context, decisions stall, and execution depends on individual judgment. Agentic systems address this by treating incidents as continuous workflows rather than disconnected steps.

Across detection, incident creation, triage, recommendation, resolution, and learning, AI agents assume responsibility for preserving context and coordinating work. Humans remain accountable, but they no longer have to reconstruct the incident at every stage. This is the practical foundation of autonomous ITOps: not unchecked automation, but systems that reduce handoffs, shorten decision cycles, and improve consistency over time.

Edwin AI applies this model in production today, using specialized agents to connect observability, reasoning, and action across the incident lifecycle.

See how Edwin AI uses agentic, autonomous ITOps to move incidents from detection to resolution with context intact.
