Tapad Needed Visibility Beyond the Endpoint
Tapad helps brands, agencies, and marketers connect with consumers across digital channels and devices. That makes the performance of its marketing tags an important part of the customer experience.
Tapad’s engineering team already monitored endpoint performance globally, but that view did not show how its tags behaved across different end-user browsers. The team needed to understand performance from the locations and environments where users were actually experiencing the service.
“We [needed] an easy, reliable, and robust way to show response times across the globe,” said Stig Henriksen, software engineer at Tapad.
Building the Same Capability In-House Could Take Months or Years
Tapad evaluated several options, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) PCP checks and an in-house build.
The team needed browser-based testing that could support the JavaScript powering its tags and be created programmatically.
“[An in-house] solution is tremendously complex. It would have taken months, if not years, to fulfill our needs,” said Paweł Cejrowski, senior software engineer at Tapad. “[LogicMonitor Internet Performance Monitoring (IPM)] supports integration of the JavaScript that powers our tags and makes it easy to create tests programmatically.”
Tapad chose LogicMonitor Internet Performance Monitoring (IPM).
From Load-Balancer Visibility to Individual Events and Requests
Tapad began using LogicMonitor IPM to automate testing through REST APIs and expanded its use across development and ongoing performance monitoring.
Before adopting the solution, Tapad’s visibility stopped at the load balancer. Now, engineers can run webpage tests across regions, examine the stages of HTTP requests, and investigate individual events and requests instead of relying only on averages.
“With [LogicMonitor IPM], we aren’t just relying on a median or average. We can investigate single events and requests and even understand the reason for slow performance,” said Cejrowski.
Tapad also uses LogicMonitor IPM to evaluate performance before release, monitor service-level agreement (SLA) performance after release, and provide performance evidence to customers.
Expanding the Same Visibility Into More Customer Workflows
Tapad plans to continue automating key processes, including customer onboarding tests, Google Cloud latency monitoring, and monthly customer performance reporting.
