Financial Services and Technology

Challenge

Since 2004, Q2 has focused on developing innovative financial services solutions for banks, credit unions, and emerging financial services providers. Based in Austin, Texas, Q2 offers a variety of secure, cloud-based digital banking solutions for deposits, money movement, lending, leasing, security, and fraud.

For banks and credit unions, fast, secure transactions are critical. Q2 was seeking a monitoring solution that was easy to maintain, simple to use, and adaptable to new technologies.

“We weren’t happy with our previous monitoring solution,” says Jordan Hager, Senior Director of IT Operations at Q2. “We were having a hard time finding people that were capable of administering it and decided to pursue a new monitoring solution—one that would require the least amount of administration.”

Rapid innovation is key to Q2’s mission, so the firm also needed monitoring to support its Nomad cluster manager and scheduler for developers using microservices and batch workloads.

To have a monitoring solution that consolidates all our environments behind a single pane of glass regardless of the environment we are in—there wasn’t another monitoring provider that really got that.

Solution

After trying a number of other products, Q2 deployed a feature called LM Service Insight on the LogicMonitor Platform. LogicMonitor provides automated, SaaS-based infrastructure monitoring and analytics for everything in the Q2 data center and its cloud environments.

“To have a monitoring solution that consolidates all our environments behind a single pane of glass regardless of the environment we are in—there wasn’t another monitoring provider that really got that,” says Hager. “We saw that LogicMonitor was a partner that understood new technology and how fast technology was changing, to ensure we are always one step ahead of our development partners.”

LM Service Insight, a LogicMonitor feature, provides dynamic services monitoring—the ability to monitor and alert on the health of a service or application—in addition to the underlying resources. The feature enabled the Q2 team to aggregate data across monitored devices, cloud and container resources. Simple to set up and use, it enables Q2 to monitor, alert, and report on the performance of HashiCorp Nomad clusters and better anticipate additional capacity.

“As soon as I learned how the DataSources work with it, LM Service Insight was very easy to implement,” says Joseph Fender, IT System Engineer at Q2.

They’re nimble, and they move quickly. And on top of that, the support we get from LogicMonitor is second to none. Overall, we are very happy with this partnership.

Benefits

LM Service Insight enables Q2 developers to gain rapid insight into a variety of workflows and services, all in one place, making its own processes more efficient.

“LogicMonitor Service Insight saves us a significant amount of time, because our teams can simply go look at one service, instead of having to look at different metrics for different devices to gain insight,” says Fender.

By providing better retention of historical data and more insight into application performance, Q2 gains the actionable information it needs to take steps to proactively prevent downtime.

“We find LM Service Insight extremely useful for capacity planning,” says Fender. “We are able to track when a node class is using too much memory or other resources and receive an immediate alert on it. We no longer have to wait for the node or the device itself to issue an alert.”

Perhaps best of all, with the LogicMonitor Platform in place, the Q2 technology team can concentrate its resources on driving innovation and business growth.

“A lot of the burden of administration is handled by the LogicMonitor team, so we are focusing our energy on the things that matter most, such as monitoring new technologies,” says Hager. “They’re nimble, and they move quickly. And on top of that, the support we get from LogicMonitor is second to none. Overall, we are very happy with this partnership.”
