How do I add devices?
Devices can be added in the following ways:
When manually adding a device, you can select between the wizard and expert mode. Adding a device with the wizard will ensure that your device is correctly configured for monitoring, while adding a device using the expert method will assume a correct device configuration.
From the Devices page, select Add | One Device (Wizard).
You will be prompted for your Device IP Address / DNS name as the first step in a four step process:
IP Address / DNS name
Enter the IP address or DNS name of your device.
The selected Collector will be assigned as the primary collector for this device, and will be used establish communication with the device using standard monitoring protocols.
Note that the Device Wizard allows duplicate devices (Duplicate IPs) to be added as long as they are monitored with distinct Collectors and have unique display names.
LogicMonitor will attempt to communicate with the device using the configured properties for the account or group. If we are unable to establish communication, you will be prompted for more information regarding the device type in step 3. You may need to provide any passwords set for the monitoring protocols that apply to your device (e.g. the rocommunity for a Linux server).
You can also use this section to set and test your SNMPv3 credentials, including User Security Name, Authentication Key, Authentication Protocol, Privacy Key, and Privacy Protocol. These options do not currently support setting/testing SNMPv3 AuthNoPriv (no encryption) or NoAuthNoPriv (no password and no encryption), but SNMPv3 related device properties can still be manually set for these methods.

Select the system type to help LogicMonitor determine which properties are required to establish communication with your device.
If you already know which properties are needed to establish communication with your device, or know that these properties are configured at the group level, the expert mode is an easy way to quickly add devices to your account.
From the Devices page, select Add | One Device (expert) to get started.
IP Address/ DNS Name
Enter the IP Address or DNS Name of your device. This will be used by the collector to establish communication.
Note that Device Expert allows duplicate devices (Duplicate IPs) to be added as long as they are monitored with distinct Collectors and have unique display names.
The name of the device will be used throughout the application, including the Device Tree and Dashboard configuration. Note that device names cannot include the operators and comparison functions listed on this page.
The description of the device will create a system.description property. This can be used within the Device Search and for Dynamic Groups.

A device URL link will be available in the header of the Device Page. When selected it will open a new browser tab.
Enabling alerting will allow alerts to be generated as instances are discovered. Notifications will be generated based on your alert rules. This is enabled by default but can be disabled if you need to adjust thresholds prior to alert generation.
Enable Net Flow Analysis
Enables collection of Network Traffic Flow data from a configured device.
Select a collector group to filter the list of available collectors that can be assigned as the preferred collector.
Assign the primary collector responsible for collecting data from the device. Backup collectors will automatically be assigned if the preferred collector fails over.
The device can be assigned to multiple groups. Groups are recommended for property, threshold, and data management as well as assigning role based access control.

You can configure LogicMonitor collectors to scan an IP range periodically and add discovered devices into the system automatically. Details about configuring a network scan are available here.
Adding a device via the API
Adding a device via the API can be extremely useful, particularly if you are looking to do a bulk upload or want to automatically add a device to monitoring as it's spun up by a configuration management tool such as Puppet or Ansible.

I added my device, what's next?
Once communication has been established, LogicMonitor will automatically detect device information, properties, existing LogicModules, and add the device to the Devices tab of your LogicMonitor account.
Auto-detected device properties and information will be added to the Properties table on the info tab for that device. You can add additional properties to specify login credentials and custom port settings for that device. LogicModule and datasource information can be seen in the Graphs tab of the device detail page.
