Resource Group Management
Last updated - 25 March, 2026
LogicMonitor enables you to manage Resource groups directly in your portal.
Managing Resource groups involves the following:
- Deleting a Resource group—You can permanently delete a Resource group you no longer need.
- Restoring a Resource group—Restoring a resource group allows you to recover a previously deleted group and reinstate its configuration and resource memberships without having to recreate it from scratch. Restoring a resource group also restores any subgroups and member resources that were deleted along with it.
- Changing the preferred Collector for a Resource group—Changing the preferred Collector for a resource group allows you to designate which Collector is responsible for monitoring the group’s resources, helping optimize data collection performance and redundancy.
Requirements for Managing a Resource Group
To restore a Resource group, you need a LogicMonitor user with Manage permissions for the Resource root directory in the Resources role permissions. For more information see Resources Role Permissions.
Deleting a Resource Group
- In LogicMonitor, navigate to Resources Tree and locate the Resource group you want to delete.
- Select Manage.
- Select Delete.
- From the Delete Group modal, select one of the following:
- To delete the specific Resource group only, select Delete Group Only.
This removes only the Resource group (and its subgroups). Member resources are not deleted. - To delete all the resources inside the group, select Cascade Delete.
This removes the resource group, its subgroups, and all member resources. Member resources are deleted across your entire LogicMonitor account, even if they are also members of other groups.
- To delete the specific Resource group only, select Delete Group Only.
- Select Delete.
Restoring a Resource Group
When a resource group is deleted, it is held in the Recently Deleted folder in Resources tree for seven days.
- In LogicMonitor, navigate to Resources Tree.
- From the Resource Tree, select “Recently Deleted Items.”
- Locate the Resource Group you want to restore, and then select the Toggle select row checkbox.
- From Actions, select “Restore.”
- Select Restore when prompted.

The Resource Group is immediately restored, and you can access it from the Resource Tree.
Changing the Preferred Collector for a Resource Group
Preferred Collector or Collector Group settings at the resource group level act as defaults applied at resource creation. The Collector Group shown in Inventory (or Resource Manage) reflects the resource’s currently assigned collector—not the preferred setting.
Note: You can override the preferred Collector at the individual resource level if needed. For more information, see Resource Management.
- In LogicMonitor, navigate to Resources Tree and locate the Resource group you want to change the preferred Collector for.
- Select Manage.
- (Optional) To narrow the Collectors, select a Collector group from the Collector Group drowndown menu.
Recommendation: If you have a large environment, this option is helpful for narrowing down your Collectors before selecting the Collector you want to set. - From the Collector dropdown, select the Collector you want to set as the preferred Collector.

- Select Save.
