Extreme Networks Access Points Monitoring

Last updated on 07 April, 2025

LogicMonitor’s monitoring package for Extreme Networks Access Points (APs) provides SNMP-based monitoring for devices running HiveOS or Extreme IQ Engine. It collects key performance metrics such as CPU and memory usage, client count, SSID activity, and radio-level statistics. The package consolidates telemetry across frequency bands and SSIDs, offering a unified view of AP performance. This enables you to monitor Extreme Networks APs efficiently and gain actionable insights into wireless network behavior. The package supports scalable and structured monitoring within the LogicMonitor platform.

Requirements for Monitoring Extreme Networks Access Points

Designed for Extreme Networks Access Points (APs) running HiveOS or the Extreme IQ Engine. To use this package, SNMP must be enabled and accessible on the target APs.

Note: APs must expose SNMP endpoints directly for compatibility.

The following Management Information Bases (MIB) must also be available:

  • AH-SYSTEM-MIB—Provides essential system data, such as CPU and memory usage, firmware version, device uptime, and environmental readings like temperature.
  • AH-INTERFACE-MIB—Delivers radio and interface-level metrics including client count, RSSI, transmit power, frame types, and throughput statistics.
  • IF-MIB—Supplies 64-bit octet counters and MAC address mappings used for accurate traffic monitoring.

Because the available MIBs do not include explicit RF band telemetry, the module makes certain assumptions when classifying radios—such as treating a third radio as 6GHz where applicable.

Note: This package is intended for APs that expose SNMP data directly. If your APs are managed through a controller such as ExtremeCloud IQ, SNMP-based monitoring may be limited or unavailable depending on the controller’s configuration.

Recommendation: This monitoring package replaces any previously released Aerohive-specific LogicModules. To avoid duplication or conflict, remove or disable those earlier modules before deploying this one.

Adding Resources into Monitoring

Add your Extreme Networks AP resources into monitoring. For more information on adding resources into monitoring, see Adding Resources.

Note: Ensure the device is SNMP-accessible by the assigned LogicMonitor Collector. The addCategory_ExtremeNetworks_AP PropertySource sets the required system.categories value of ExtremeNetworksAP, enabling module application using AppliesTo rules.

Assigning Properties to Resources

The addCategory_ExtremeNetworks_AP PropertySource automatically assigns properties to resources that match the AppliesTo logic.

PropertyDescription
system.categoriesSet to ExtremeNetworksAP, enabling DataSources to apply through hasCategory("ExtremeNetworksAP").
auto.endpoint.serial_numberSerial number of the AP (from AH-SYSTEM-MIB).
auto.endpoint.modelDevice model (For example, AP305C, AP410C).
auto.firmware_versionFirmware version (For example, HiveOS 10.x or IQ Engine build).
predef.externalResourceTypeSet to Wireless for classification.

Note: These properties are assigned automatically during Active Discovery by the PropertySource. No manual assignment is required unless troubleshooting or custom logic is needed.

Migration from LogicModules

With the release of this suite, the following legacy LogicModules are now deprecated:

  • Aerohive_Access_Point_Neighbors
  • Aerohive_clients-
  • Aerohive_snmp64_wifi_If-

If you are currently using these legacy modules, you can safely import the updated LogicModules included in this suite. The new modules use different internal identifiers, ensuring they do not overwrite or interfere with existing configurations or historical data.

Note: Running both legacy and new LogicModules simultaneously results in duplicate data and alerts. To avoid this, disable the legacy modules after you have confirmed the new suite is working as expected.

Disabling stops data collection and alerting but preserves historical data. Deleting a module permanently removes its historical data. For more information, see Disabling Monitoring for a New Instance

Import LogicModules

From the LogicMonitor Exchange, import all Cisco Meraki LogicModules from the package. For more information, see LogicModules in Package. If these LogicModules are already installed, ensure you have the latest versions.

Troubleshooting

If data is missing or unexpected behavior occurs during monitoring, review the following common issues and limitations that may affect data collection or module application.

  • Band Classification Assumption—Some Extreme Networks AP models support tri-radio configurations (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz), but due to channel overlap and lack of RF telemetry, the module assumes the third radio (`wifi2`) operates in the 6 GHz band. This may result in misclassification for flexible radio configurations.
  • SNMP Access Required—Direct SNMP access to APs is required. In controller-managed environments (for example, ExtremeCloud IQ), SNMP may be disabled or unavailable at the AP level.
  • Not for Controller-Only Deployments—The package does not support environments where AP data is available only through REST APIs or cloud interfaces.
  • Device Scope—Modules apply only to devices with system.sysinfo containing “HiveOS” or “IQ Engine,” or a matching sysoid (1.3.6.1.4.1.26928.1). Devices outside this scope are not classified or monitored.

LogicModules in Package

Display NameTypeDescription
ExtremeNetworks_AP_SSIDsDataSource Monitors Extreme Networks AP SSIDs by consolidating client metrics, tracking bit and frame throughput, QoS traffic, RSSI, and frame drops due to MIC failures to provide comprehensive insights into network performance and wireless health. It also posts client VLAN assignments, channel usage, CWP activity, authentication methods to the instance description and/or instance level properties.
ExtremeNetworks_AP_RadiosDataSourceOrganizes radio metrics by band (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) to provide structured insights into client count, airtime, bit transmission and reception, frame activity by type and priority, frame drops, errors and retries, and transmit power for a comprehensive view of wireless performance.
ExtremeNetworks_AP_PerformanceDataSourceMonitors Extreme Networks AP system performance, providing insights into client count, system uptime,  CPU and memory utilization, and environmental temperature in Celsius.
addCategory_ExtremeNetworks_APPropertySourceAdds system.categories and other properties to ExtremeNetworks Access Point devices.
