OpenTelemetry Metric Alert Configuration
Last updated – 14 October, 2026
An OpenTelemetry metric (OTel) alert configuration generates alerts when ingested metric data meets specified conditions. You can create an OpenTelemetry metric alert configuration using either the Query Builder or a Raw query (PromQL expression). The Query Builder provides options to construct a query by selecting metrics, filters, aggregations, and grouping attributes, while a Raw Query enables you to enter a PromQL expression directly.
An OpenTelemetry metric alert configuration combines a name and alert group with either a visual query created using the Query Builder or a PromQL expression. LogicMonitor compares the query result with a configured threshold to determine whether to trigger an alert. The PromQL expression selects and aggregates time-series data, while LogicMonitor provides centralized monitoring and alerting for metrics received through supported metric ingestion pipelines.
Requirements for Adding Alert Configurations
To configure OpenTelemetry metric alerts, you need the following:
- To query OpenTelemetry metrics, you need OTel Metrics enabled in your LogicMonitor portal.
- To create and manage OpenTelemetry metric alert configurations, you need a LogicMonitor user with the “Manage” permission set.
- Ensure that the OpenTelemetry metric that you want to use is ingested in LogicMonitor and the metric is available for querying.
Adding Alert Configurations
- In LogicMonitor, navigate to
More > OTel Metrics. - Select Add Alert Rule from the
dropdown menu on the Alert Configuration page. - In the Name field, enter a name for the alert configuration.
- (Optional) In the Description field, enter a description for the alert configuration.

- Under Select where to create this alert, do one of the following:
- To use an existing alert group:
- Select Existing.
- Select the alert group from the Group dropdown menu.
- To create a new alert group:
- Select Create new.
- In the Group name field, enter a name for the alert group.
- (Optional) In the Group description field, enter a description for the alert group.
- To use an existing alert group:
- In the Query section, select the time range from the Time range dropdown menu.
- To build a query in the Query Builder section, do the following:
- Select Query Builder.
- To restrict the metric scope, under Filter by, add the filters.
- Select the aggregation from the aggregation dropdown menu.
By default, the aggregation is set to Average. - (Optional) Select the grouping attributes from the By dropdown menu.
- (Optional) Select Add function, and then configure the query function.
- In the Step field, enter the duration between query evaluation points.
- Review the query in the Generated query section.
- Select Run query.
The Query preview pane displays the query results.
- To use a raw query, do the following:
- Select Raw Query.
- Enter the PromQL expression in the Enter PromQL query field.
- In the Step field, enter the duration between query evaluation points.
- Select Run query.
The query results display.
- To build a query in the Query Builder section, do the following:
- To configure an alert threshold, do the following:
- Select the comparison operator for the generated query from the Alert threshold section.
- Enter the threshold value to trigger the alert.
- Select the severity from the Trigger dropdown menu.
- Select Add.
LogicMonitor creates the alert configuration and displays it in the selected alert group.
Adding an Alert Group
- In LogicMonitor, navigate to
More > OTel Metrics. - Select Add Alert Group from the
dropdown menu on the Alert Configuration page. - In the Group name field, enter a name.

- (Optional) In the Description field, enter a description for the alert group.
- Select Add to create the alert group.
